The Republic of Ireland international was also fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £1,000 prosecution costs by Northwich magistrates, Cheshire.

Kennedy, 25, of Beechfield Road, Alderley Edge, Cheshire, had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to driving a friend's Jaguar without due care and attention.

Charges of failing to stop for a police officer and driving while unfit through drink were dismissed by the court last month after the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence.

The lawyer acting for the £2 million Wolverhampton Wanderers winger, convicted of drink-driving in 1996, said his client was both apologetic and embarrassed.

Kennedy, who has won 33 caps for his country, was offered the opportunity to enrol on a drink-driving rehabilitation course, which will see his ban cut by a quarter.

The court heard how the soccer star was pulled over by police in the early hours of Sunday September 9 last year near his home.

Giving evidence, the footballer admitted drinking three bottles of Smirnoff Ice while socialising the previous evening in nearby Brasinganens Wine Bar but denied being over the drink-drive limit.
