Former Red backs Dudek

Dudek saw a seemingly harmless backpass bounce through his legs, allowing Manchester United's Diego Forlan to score (yes score) a tap in.

But the Pole has drawn support from all quarters, and now it's former midfield maestro Ronnie Whelan backing him.

He said: ""Dudek can't take all the blame. If you look at the match before his mistake, Liverpool weren't creating chances. Vladimir Smicer had a shot in the first half but that was about it.

"We had it with Bruce Grobbelaar from time to time when I was playing. You win as a team and you lose as a team. It's not fair to put all the blame in the direction of one person.

"It was a silly goal to give away and it put us back on our heels a little bit. But at the same time I don't think we were creating enough chances of our own."

And Whelan is adament that Liverpool can turn things around and win something this season.

"We have a big month coming up with some very important games. We're four points behind Arsenal now and it's crucial that when we play them at the end of December that the gap hasn't increased.

"We showed at the start of the season that we're capable of beating teams and getting good results. I'm sure we can turn things around and win something at the end of the season."
