Former Red backs Rush appointment

Spackman worked alongside Rush at Barnsley, and believes the Welshman can help bring goals to the Reds forward line.

He said: "Everyone knows him at Liverpool and his record as the club's greatest goalscorer speaks for itself. Ian will have the respect of everyone there and I am sure will be involved not only with the first team players, but in helping the youngsters at the club, too.

"It can only enhance their game. Not only can Ian talk about things, but he can demonstrate too. He is still a very fit guy. I am sure Liverpool's dip in form has affected the strikers' confidence but once Ian settles in, knows what Gerard Houllier and the players want from him, then he will be able to make a difference.

"Michael Owen has improved and changed his game as people have become accustomed to how he uses his amazing pace. Defenders have started dropping off him and letting him play in front of them.

"Ian was a very quick player himself. Michael, and the others, will be able to bounce ideas off each other about how to deal with certain situations and work on things in training, which will help with confidence going into matches.

"Liverpool have come in for some criticism recently, but they made a fantastic start to the season only to suffer a dip in form. Some people are talking about a crisis, but if they can start scoring goals again they have always got a chance.

"If the strikers can get bit of confidence back, then there is no reason why Liverpool cannot be back among the Champions League places."
