Errors at Middlesbrough and Fulham in recent weeks have proved costly, and Lawrensen thinks that it's time to take the Pole out of the firing line and give youngster Chris Kirkland his anxiously awaited opportunity.

He said: "Dudek is a world class keeper who has not become bad overnight, but he is going through a bad run and it is time to take him out of the firing line.

"He now looks nervous, shaky and short of confidence ahead of the UEFA Cup game with Vitesse Arnhem.

"Kirkland, therefore, should be given his chance because, after all, what is the worst that could happen? Kirkland could make a mistake, but that is exactly what is happening with Dudek.

"Houllier must stand by his players, of course, but he should also give his reserves and youngsters a chance."
