Former Red hoping for Liverpool success

Thompson left Anfield two seasons ago, but he still has a lot of admiration for the Merseyside team.

He said: "Leaving Liverpool was the making of me as a player. I don't think I would have improved the way I have if I hadn't left. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you're not playing then you're not going to get any better.

"I have no regrets when I look back at my time at Liverpool but when anyone leaves Anfield it's a step down. They are one of the top three clubs in Europe so it's not something you want to have to do. I've been enjoying my football since I left and that's the main thing."

Thommo added: "We've played Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool and from what I've seen I still think Arsenal are the best. But I don't think Liverpool are out of it no matter what happens today.

"I'd prefer them to win it rather than the other two. Part of me will always be with the club and wanting them to do well. My mates are still there and the Liverpool fans I meet are always supportive of me."
