After leaving Liverpool, Collymore went on to Aston Villa, Leicester, Bradford City then Real Oviedo, where he famously walked out of his contract two years ago.

The 32-year old striker spent a season at Southend back in 92/93, and is a popular candidate for the vacant position at Roots Hall.

"I don't want to say much at this moment," said deputy chairman Geoffrey King. "We haven't made any decision regarding the management of the club, but we are in talks with Stan Collymore, although it's early days."
