The 36-year-old German spent four years at Anfield from 2000 to 2004, but struggled to overcome Guillain Syndrome and spent his last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers before returning to Germany to join Bayern Munich.

"It was a huge, but joyful surprise to find out I am coach," he said Babbel.

"It will not be an easy task. I still need to fill out some forms and send them away for my coaching diploma."
