Ziege, who was brought to Liverpool by Gerard Houllier in September 2000, has been forced to retire because of a persistant ankle injury.

Ziege said: "I'm sad my career as a player is ending. But I'm happy that all the back and forth over injuries, rehabilitation, hopes and disappointments are finally over."

Ziege was part of the Liverpool side that beat Birmingham on penalties to win the League Cup in 2001 and was one of the successful penalty takers that day.
