The former Liverpool forward is being tipped to take the helm at Pride Park if, as expected, the first division club announce the departure of John Gregory.

The former Welsh international scored 25 times in his 61 games for Liverpool when Graeme Souness signed him from Derby in 1991.

Saunders has been coaching the strikers at Blackburn Rovers this season, but would jump at the opportunity to return to one of his former clubs, although the favourite to take the job must surely be caretaker boss George Burley.
