Speaking on his website at Icons.com, Don says: "I was – like millions of others – an interested armchair spectator on Wednesday night for Liverpool's Champions League game at home to Galatasaray and to be honest despite it ending 0-0, I was pretty impressed with my old team.

"I thought it was only a superb display from Galatasaray's Colombian goalkeeper that stopped Liverpool from gaining three valuable group points, but sadly that could prove to be vital in a few weeks' time. It was a privilege for me to play for Liverpool a few years back and I'd love to see them go all the way both the Premiership and in Europe but it's not going to be easy for them.

"A lot of people have criticised Liverpool for their so-called defensive style of play under Gerard Houllier but I don't think that's fair. Yes, they have changed dramatically since I was there in terms of style but it's certainly not a change for the worse.

"I'd argue that it's a change for the better because Liverpool are playing Champions League football these days and that hasn't always been the case in recent years. In Europe you have to play a certain way because some of the most talented players on the continent can expose you easily given half a chance.

"It's no good losing matches 4-3, and Liverpool have proved that winning games by a single goal can pay dividends. Just look at the way they progressed in the UEFA Cup last year with narrow hard-fought wins. Defensively they are sound and that is the foundation you need to win trophies.

"My tip for the title is still Manchester United but it would be fantastic to see Liverpool win it."
