Here's just a few of the comments...

"I heard the news from David Johnson this morning and was absolutely gutted. Emlyn was a larger than life character and was one of the lads with myself Terry McDermott, Peter Thompson and Alan Hansen - we always went out together. I'll miss him greatly"
Alan Kennedy

"It's such a sad, sad, day. The smile on his face, that tells you everything about Emlyn Hughes. He was so positive in everything he did. He was a fabulous person to be around, fun, he loved to go out with the lads. He loved a pint but absolutely adored his football. Of all the people I've known in football I'd say Emlyn is the one who absolutely adored playing football no matter where he was playing. He would just want to give 110%. The Liverpool fans will never forget him. We possibly will never see the likes of him again."
Terry McDermott

"He was special to us all. The Crazy Horse will be missed. His effervescent character and will to win every game rubbed off on all of us. He was a magnificent captain not just for Liverpool but England as well and we should never forget that. He had great support from Barbara and the kids and we have to send our condolences to his family, who will be suffering dearly. It will take us all a long while to get over the loss of Crazy Horse. He was always bubbly and sparking and in all the time I have known him, he was never down. It is so sad that he was made to battle at the end of his short life."
Phil Neal

"He was an absolute legend. When I went to Liverpool he was the main man. He was a wonderful player and a fantastic example to everyone. He was the best person to learn from and a larger than life character. Football will definitely miss him - he was a legend."
Graeme Souness

"I have been in management for 25 years and all over Europe. I would have been very pleased to have had Emlyn in any of my squads. In our Liverpool days, if you were feeling low on confidence, you needed a player like him in your side. The bigger the game, the better he was."
John Toshack

"He was a great captain for England, everyone enjoyed seeing him play because he was so enthusiastic, he loved the game. This boy's enthusiasm, I don't know where he got it from but if you could have packaged it, it would have done the nation some good."
Ian St John

"I admired him as a young lad watching the Liverpool team of the 60s. Shanks identified in him someone perhaps who was his mirror image on the pitch. I was taken by Emlyn's all-action style. He was all arms and legs and he scored spectacular goals. He always had a huge smile when he scored."
David Fairclough

"He just had this boundless energy and enthusiasm. As a player he was incredibly adaptable. He came to the club as a midfielder, played left-back for England and ended up as centre-back for Liverpool. His enthusiasm drove us on as a team. He expected and demanded the best from his team."
Ray Clemence
