Former Red's praise for Crouch

Crouch is the first out and out target man to play for Liverpool since Toshack himself in the 1970's. While Crouch's signing was a suprise to many, the Wales manager says the 6ft 7in striker will be a success for the Reds.

"Crouchy did very well at Southampton and he has been involved in the England set-up so he is obviously no mug," says Tosh.

"He scored a lot of goals in a relegation battle at St Mary's and this, in itself, is a big achievement. If he can come to Liverpool and do a similar job then I'm sure everyone will be happy.

"When Rafa was in charge at Valencia he liked to play a 4-2-3-1 system and it worked very well for him there. I've got a feeling that this is the system he is most comfortable with and the one he would most like to employ at Liverpool.

"The problem with playing one up front in England is people see it as a defensive tactic because they are used to seeing two forwards. But this couldn't be further from the truth.

"When I was in charge at Real Madrid I played one up front and in one season we scored 107 goals, which is a record, although we did have the great Hugo Sanchez up front that year.

"I can see Benitez going down the same path using Crouch up front with three players behind - maybe Cisse towards the right, where he has been using him a lot during pre-season, Gerrard in the middle and the new lad Gonzalez on the left when he is fit.

"Last season Benitez didn't have his own players, he had to cope with a lot of injuries and he was coming to terms with the English game so I think he played 4-4-2 simply because he had no other option but I think that will change this year."
