Fowler ready to hit back

The 27-year-old striker has seen a career seemingly destined for glory take a desperate downward spiral since Gerard Houllier decided to accept a £11m bid from Leeds United in November 2001.

Despite a healthy scoring record during his time at Elland Road, Fowler was soon sold to Manchester City as the Yorkshire club's financial crisis took hold. The former England man has looked a shadow of his former self since his transfer to Kevin Keegan's side but he insists that he is far from past his best.

Fowler said: "I can sense the City fans are dubious about me and I don't blame them because I've hardly got off to a flying start at my new club.

"There has been some criticism and I know that they are not all behind me at the moment but it is my job to win them over. I know I can only do that with hard work to get me out of what has been one of the worst patches of my career.

"Things haven't gone right for me. There have been injury problems and the situation at Leeds was a nightmare that affected the players there far more than people realise.

"For most of the time at City last season I was playing with painkilling injections for my back and was unable to train. Obviously that hardly does nothing for your form or fitness, and I suffered. I still wasn't right pre-season and it has taken me a while to get back to where I want to be, but I can feel it coming.

"It's hard to explain what it has been like, especially that nightmare at Leeds. It was as though people were making out my signing as the reason it all fell apart, but when you look at my record I did well there scoring 14 goals from 24 starts.

"The fans don't want to hear excuses and I know that. They just want to see me putting it in, and that is exactly what I will do. You can never promise goals but you can promise effort, and believe me, I will do everything to win them over."

Fowler's hopes of regaining the form of his early years at Anfield will undoubtedly be boosted by the arrival at Manchester City of his close friend, and former Anfield colleague, Steve McManaman.

Fowler added: It's good to have Steve here, he is a quality player who has played at the very highest level and we are friends who are on the same wavelength.

"He knows my game instinctively, and I know that he can perform magic with his passing and movement. I think he will be a great help not just to me, but the team.

"The manager Kevin Keegan is right behind me and he has been very patient, as have the fans, and I want to repay them for that."
