Gaillard backtracks

In an attempt to draw attention away from UEFA's shambolic handling of the European Cup final, spokesman William Gaillard shifted all the blame onto Liverpool fans and called us the worst behaved in Europe.

UEFA are due to hand a dossier to the British government showing Reds as the most persistent offenders in Europe. However, Gaillard has had to admit that most of the 25 offences in the dossier are "small". Gaillard has also been forced to admit that Liverpool supporters are not "the worst fans".

"We cannot compare apples and oranges. There have been over 25 incidents involving Liverpool supporters since 2003, some of them small, some more worrisome," said Gaillard, who is facing calls for his dismissal.

"The problems with Liverpool have not been big enough to earn the club any sanctions from UEFA, which means we are probably talking about a few small groups causing trouble outside the stadiums.

"This is not about saying that Liverpool are the worst club. But we received this police report and thought it was a relevant time to pass on our concerns to the sports minister."
