Garcia calls for domestic improvement

Despite having a fantastic European campaign, which culminated in the European Cup returning to Anfield for keeps, Liverpool's domestic form was inconsistent last season.

Luis Garcia, joint top-scorer last season, says the Reds must improve their Premiership form this time around and be in the race for the title.

"Winning the Champions League was a dream for everyone at Liverpool, but we must now strive for the consistency we did not find in the Premiership," he says.

"It was a big disappointment to finish outside the top four and so far behind the champions, and it is only thanks to the common-sense of UEFA that we can defend the European title.

"We must make sure we don't find ourselves in that position again next summer. We have to show that we are a team capable of challenging for the title.

"Last season we had a new manager and a lot of players who were not familiar with the way the game is played in England. As a consequence we lost games that we should not have lost.

"This year things should be different. We now know what to expect in the Premiership and we have the added confidence of knowing that we are the champions of Europe. Everyone will want to beat us, but we have the quality in the team to be able to cope with that.

"A big issue will be whether we can keep our best players fit. There were times last season when we were weakened by injuries, but if we avoid that situation this time then we will have a good chance."
