The former Barcelona winger knows the number ten has a place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful, and he is confident that he can prove a worthy successor to the Real Madrid man.

Garcia said: "I'm taking the number ten shirt. I realise it's got a special meaning for Liverpool fans.

"I asked for the No 10. I like putting pressure on myself. I have signed for five years, but I intend to stay for as long as possible. I know how big the desire is here to make things work, and me and Xabi Alonso are determined to do something historic here. It was a tough decision to leave Barcelona."
