Gerard thankful for Gerrard

The 23-year-old midfielder was at his majestic best as his team-mates struggled to a frustrating 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Portsmouth in Sunday's FA Cup tie.

The England star has been a rare shining light in a season full of disappointment, and Gerard Houllier expects the Huyton Hammer to become a leading world star in the very near future.

Houllier said: "I am confident that soon he can be a real world star player. "Stevie keeps developing. Not only in terms of playing but also attitude and leadership.

"We know what stage he wants to reach and we will help him with that. He also knows what I expect from him and maybe one day he will get more recognition than he has at the moment. That will come with time. He trains as he plays, he gives everything."

Houllier's admiration for his inspirational captain is only tempered by the uncomfortable truth that many critics will be waiting for Gerrard's magnificent efforts to slip in the future.

Houllier added: "You have to be careful in this country. If Stevie say misses a few games, people think he has lost something.

"The key in football is humility and hard work. Let him do his job now and then we will see at the end of the season what level he has achieved. And similarly in two or three years time."
