"I just feel jealousy when I sit and watch Champions League football on the TV," he said. "Especially after playing in it for two seasons. That is the place to be, obviously.
"I want to be there as an individual. It is such a great tournament that you just want to play in it. It is horrible sitting at home watching it."
But Liverpool fans need not worry. The Reds skipper isn't going anywhere just yet, and hopes to agree a new contract very soon.
"You are talking weeks rather than months now on my new contract," he said.
"Talks are at an advanced stage now and it is just a case now of knocking the contract together.
"I am looking forward to signing it and I am staying at Liverpool."
