But Gerrard added that if Liverpool maintained their current form, there was no telling what could happen.

"Our current form is championship-winning form," he said. "It's just about that level of consistency, and we've got to be even more consistent. This time last year we went on a fantastic run of 10 or 11 wins from 12 games and that's the type of run we're going to need to go on from now until the end of the season."

But Gerrard was under no illusions at the magnitude of the task ahead.

He added, "We've got to concentrate on winning and hopefully that will put a bit of pressure on Chelsea and Manchester United. If they do slip up, it will only be little slips. They are not going to lose three or four games. But we have to be ready to capitalise on any little slip-ups they make."

"If we keep playing the way we're playing and Chelsea slip up, I think we can catch them. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later and then we can set our targets on Manchester United," Gerrard concluded.
