McClaren has come in for a lot of criticism since becoming England manager and Gerrard believes it's time for the players to take the heat off the beleagured boss by racking up a good win in Estonia.

"The result is the most important thing, the three points and hopefully we can get a good performance," said the England vice-captain.

"If we perform to the same level of the Brazil game we will get the performance and the right result.

"It is down to the players to take some heat off the manager. He has come up against some stick before the Brazil game and it is not nice as a player to see that happening, so I think it is time for the players to take responsibility.

"The players have got to take a lot of heat off him by performing better."
