But the Liverpool boss now seems keen to recall Gerrard after he appears to have responded well to the situation.
"Steven Gerrard has been different since he came back from Basel," said Houllier.
"He seems to enjoy himself more and the good Steven Gerrard is on his way back. We miss him."
