Gerrard confident of qualifying

England are currently fourth in the group behind Croatia, Russia and Israel but the Liverpool skipper says Wednesday's win over Estonia was a confidence booster and will inspire England to qualify.

"I think we can all go away now and have a good rest on the back of a good result attained under difficult circumstances.

"And credit to the players. There was a lot of pressure on the team following recent results, but I think the boys showed a lot of character and determination to get the result we required.

"When you play for England the pressure is always big and if you haven't been getting the results you should be getting or putting in the performances you should be putting in, the pressure intensifies.

"But the character of the team came through against Estonia. We worked hard, got the goal and never looked back. We looked very comfortable and could have scored more goals.

"There's certainly relief among the players that we appear to have turned the corner. With all due respect to teams like Estonia the all-important thing is to get the first goal and get it as quickly as possible.

"The goals lifts the weight off your shoulders because you know the longer the game goes on without a goal the more nervous and edgy you become and the fans become.

"Sometimes the pressure is over the top. But you are playing for your country and you have to expect it.

"Expectations are and always will be extremely high and the demands on the team are excessive. But you have to take pressure and demands on the chin.

"But we're talking about the best players in the country playing for England and as a group we expect pressure. We know there is no hiding place.

"I accept sometimes it's difficult to perform when the pressure is so high. Fortunately the last two performances have been good and now we need to build on that next season.

"Performances prior to that haven't been good enough and you look back and accept that people were right to criticise us.

"We are in a nice position with five games left and four at home. We set the standard against Brazil and we need to build on that and make Wembley a fortress."
