26-year-old Murphy has scored eleven times this season - including a stunning strike against Leeds last week whilst playing on the left for the Reds - and Gerrard believes that his good friend has earnt a chance to shine for the national side.

Gerrard said: "Obviously it's up to the manager and there are many great players he can choose from. But if Danny was picked on the left, he wouldn't let anyone down.

"He's been outstanding for us this year and he's the type of player who suits international football. His passing ability and goalscoring record is excellent and because he's so versatile he's a great player to have in the squad.

"Everyone can see how much we enjoy playing with each other for Liverpool and it would be great to get the chance to do the same for England.

"There aren't many midfielders in the country who've played as well as he has this season, so if he's picked it will be fully deserved."
