With John Terry picking up an injury that is set to rule him out of both of England's games this week, Jamie Carragher has come in for some undeserved criticism for his decision to retire from international football. However, Steven Gerrard has leapt to his defence and says Carra's decision must be respected.

"I've got no worries about Sol [Campbell]. He is experienced. His form for Portsmouth has been very good," said the Reds' skipper.

"Against Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, he was fantastic. I am sure he will come in and do a great job for England.

"Do I wish Jamie Carragher was still involved with England? I tried my best to keep Jamie involved, not just as a friend but because I still thought he had something to offer the country for a bit longer.

"Jamie has made his decision and we have to respect that but I did try my best to keep him involved."
