His late winner, from a controversial free kick, ensured three points for Rafa Benitez's men.

"The idea before the game was always to get three points," he said. "We're pleased with that and are pleased with the first 60 minutes in which we controlled the game. Villa got back into it and levelled but we managed to pull one out of the bag with a late goal.

"It's about time the lads let me take one," he said of the free kick with which he scored the winner. "I've been in the team for 8 years but they never let me take free kicks because they usually go over, but I managed to catch it right today and was pleased to see it go in the top corner.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill was fuming with the decision to award Liverpool the free kick from which Gerrard scored, but the Liverpool skipper dismissed suggestions that they were cheated.

"These things happen in football. Some decisions you get, some you don't. There were a few decisions they got which we weren't happy over but we got on with it. I'm sure over the season Aston Villa's decisions will even themselves out.

"It was a great team performance and its nice to go into the Chelsea game with three points on the board.

"Over the last couple of seasons we've been disappointed with the starts we've made.

"We've dropped silly points and been playing catch up to the big boys early on but the idea this year is to have a solid start, get out of the box as quick as possible and try and stay in the race all the way."
