Gerrard delighted with Porto win

The result was flattering on a night when the Reds looked less than convincing, but the result gives them the opportunity to qualify for the qualification phase of the competition if they win in Marseille.

"The most important thing was getting the job done," said the Liverpool skipper after the game. "It was all about winning the game tonight.

"We can play better and need to play better in the last game but we're pleased to score four goals.

"I think you've got to give them credit. They passed the ball well and have got quality players. They were well organised and we knew it would be a tough test but I think once we got the second goal they fell apart and that's why we got the third and the fourth.

When asked about the atmosphere created by the Anfield crowd, Gerrard added: "We say it every Champions League game, but it's like having an extra player. They might not realise it but as you're playing you can feel the difference when they make a big noise and get behind you. For opposition players it must be a nightmare.

"It was all about us winning tonight and we've got a big job to do when we go to Marseille. I think it's better to know when you've got to win. Sometimes when you need a draw it can play on your mind a bit and affect your performance.

"We're playing well, we've got a bit of confidence, we've got to focus back on the league now and try to stay at the top of the table then go into that last game with confidence, but tonight's performance and the Besiktas performance will be no good if we slip up on the last day.

Gerrard's penalty goal equals the club Champions League scoring record held by Michael Owen.

"It's a proud moment," he said. "Michael is a fantastic player and to equal that record is special for myself but it was all about the win tonight, not me.

"I had a bit of a bad time earlier in the season when I was fighting out of my form, but now my form is back I know goals will come if I'm playing well."
