"It was a mass game for us today," said the Liverpool skipper, who scored the final goal of the game. "Obviously we're at home next week so we fancy our chances there.

"It's still in our hands. Hopefully Newcastle will slip up tomorrow but Villa have drawn today so it was important to capitalise and we've taken three important points.

"It was a great team performance. We knew it was going to be hard to come here today.

"Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job bthis season and he's got them all up for it. But gradually we wore them out. I thought we controlled the game all the way through.

"I think the manager will be more pleased with the clean sheet. That's the third in a row so we've got to keep that going into next week and we fancy our chances to snap up that fourth spot now."
