Gerrard determined to progress

Liverpool's weekend defeat to Man Utd means the Reds only have the European Cup to play for this season. That will fire the players on against Barcelona tonight says the Reds' skipper.

"It scares you as a player to think that if we go out of this competition, then we will only have the top four to play for with such a big chunk of the season still left," said Gerrard.

"We have to use that fear, the awful feeling of having nothing to play for, to motivate us against Barca and get the result we need to reach the last eight.

"As captain, I will be telling the rest of the team before the game that we are in a great position in this competition, if we beat them we can go on and win it, but if we lose then that's it for the season. I'll say we have a chance of keeping it all going - let's take it.

"We're out of the cups and out of the title race, which means that the Champions League takes on an even greater importance.

"Yes, we only have one trophy to play for now, but it's not a bad one to aim at, is it?"
