Gerrard disappointed

Gerrard captained England last night in their 1-0 defeat to Spain and after the game he admitted the result and performance were poor.

"It was not the performance or result we were looking for. We were looking to win tonight and were looking for a decent performance looking to the qualifiers," said the midfielder.

"We didn't get the test we wanted tonight, we wanted confidence. We got some good individual performances - Woodgate and Dyer.

"Once those two qualifiers come around we can be confident we can get two good results.

"It's not nice to hear [the boos] but the fans have paid money to come here and see goals.

"We started the game very well, we were on top but didn't score and that's really difficult.

"If we had scored first it would have given us a real confidence boost but if you don't against quality players you get punished."
