Gerrard's stunning strike just after the hour gave Sven's men a seemingly unassailable 2-0 lead before calamity James emerged to hand the Austrians a  share of the spoils.

Gerrard said: ""We couldn't believe it. We threw two points away tonight. For 70 minutes there wasn't a problem and we were in complete control of the match, but for the last 20 minutes we were all over the place and I don't know what happened.

"It's a disappointing result considering we were 2-0 up and in so much control, but we can make amends now by winning in Poland on Wednesday night."

The Reds skipper was able to raise a smile, however, when reminded of his tremendous strike that gave his side a two-goal lead.

He added:  "I caught the shot lovely. As soon as I hit it I knew it was going to work the 'keeper and it was great to see the ball hit the back of the net."
