Gerrard down but not out

"I'm very down at the moment," he revealed. "But am trying to stay as positive as possible beause it's important in terms of recovery.

"It's not that easy when you're sitting on the couch with your foot in the air all the time but I have to just get on with it.

"I can only go with the advice that the doctor and physio here at the club have given me and they are telling me that I could be back playing again inside eight weeks.

"That's what I'm hoping for and when I can I'll be working hard to get back as soon as possible.

"It's the type of injury that I cannot afford to rush and I'll be working out a timetable with the medical staff at the club to make sure that I'm absolutely ready to return.

"To be honest I don't think the team will miss me while I'm out. Xabi Alonso is playing well out there and for me he's one of the best midfielders in the world.

"You've also got Didi Hamann and everyone knows how highly I rate him, and Salif Diao can hold his own in midfield so we are seeing the value of a bigger squad.

"Other people will get a chance to show everyone what they can do and that can only be a benefit to the club."
