The captain admits things aren't going well for the Reds this season but hopes tomorrow's match will give the team the chance to turn things around.

"We're going into the game on the back of some disappointing results, so yes, as the leader of the team, I and the other experienced players know it's time to rally the troops, get them ready," said Gerrard.

"I understand the fans' frustration at the moment with results in the league but it's a different tournament completely.

"The fans know that on our day we can beat Manchester United. Their support could play a big part - 9,000 of them and I'm sure they'll be very noisy.

"I'd love nothing more come that final whistle to be enjoying a victory with them.

"It could help the whole remainder of the season if we win. The atmosphere in the dressing room if we beat them will be fantastic and hopefully it could push us on to improve results in the league."
