The 23-year-old England international was shattered by the experience of the club's dismal failure to reach the Champions League last season, and he is determined to ensure that he and his fellow Reds perform to their very best in the forthcoming campaign.

Gerrard said: "We will definitely improve this year on our position last time.

"We will be a lot closer to the title than we were and obviously the main thing is to get back into the Champions League.

"We've got the players in the squad to do it, but we have to be a lot more consistent this season than we were last time, and we will be."

"A lot of people talk about the style of play, but I don't think that's an issue. If you look at our results away from Anfield they're as good as any in the league. It's at home where we have to improve most."

"If we're at our best we're not far off being a team capable of winning the title. Maybe it's a lot to expect to go from fifth to winning the title, but we think we're good enough to do it."
