Gerrard: Fans were right to boo

"As soon as the game ended against Southampton we all knew it would go mental. You can't have a result like that and not expect criticism," said the club captain.

"The fans booed us at the end and, even though none of us like to hear it, I understand why they did it. They were right. We don't expect to get beaten at home to Southampton.

"When that happens, it's fair enough that they should make their feelings known to us. The only point I would make is while this is justified now and again, I don't think supporters should start making a habit of it.

"The fans pay good money to go the game and are entitled to have a go at us, but as captain of the team I can assure you that it's going to make the lads play a lot better if they're right behind us.

"My message would be 'you had a go at us, and you were right to, but don't do it all the time'".
