Gerrard fear for McAteer

McAteer, now currently leading ambitious Tranmere's charge to the top of League One, admits that he is bewildered by Benitez's decision to utilise the gifted midfield general on both flanks in the disappointing defeat to Bolton.

McAteer said: "I am disappointed Gerrard wasn't in a central midfield role. It happened when Gerard Houllier was manager.

"When he plays well and Liverpool play well, Liverpool win games. He should be playing there. When he is not, he is doing too much and putting his foot in at the wrong time. They should play the ball through him."
