Gerrard ideal England captain

The Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper, who will face Gerrard and England on Thursday, says the Liverpool skipper would be the ideal candidate to lead England under Steve McClaren.

"I'm sure England are happy with David Beckham as their skipper at this World Cup, but there's no doubt Gerrard has the potential to be England's next captain," said West Ham goalie Hislop.

"Time will tell, of course, and the new manager, Steve McClaren, will make his own decisions, but Gerrard has all the credentials anyone needs - he is a natural leader.

"After what happened between Liverpool and West Ham in the Cup Final I know what he is capable of. He is going to be hard to play against because of his powerful running.

"He covers the whole of the pitch and runs everywhere, but he's not just a workhorse, he brings a fantastic amount of quality and is hard for anyone to play against.

"I'd say that, quite possibly, he is the most complete midfielder in the world. Only recently we have seen Chelsea paying vast amounts to put Ballack into their set-up, but Gerrard is as good as anyone who plays the game.

"West Ham were doing well in the Cup Final until Gerrard stepped up and destroyed us with two great goals. But I wasn't surprised because he has shown those qualities for a number of years, his leadership, his character and his uncanny ability to produce something out of the blue right when Liverpool need it is top class.

"He showed that consistently through the Champions League last season when they won it and again at Cardiff.

"Just when we were coming to terms with the game and starting to establish some dominance, he pops up with the pass to Djibril Cisse to make it 2-1, then the equaliser.

"Then, just as we can see the finish line, he produces that strike to make it 3-3 and send it in to extra-time.

"That goal plunged me into disbelief in a number of ways, because it was a shot out of nothing. I remember hearing the Tannoy announcer saying there'd be a minimum of four minutes and it seemed that was cue Steven Gerrard - it was disbelief, because I felt it was a hard thing to take as we deserved more."
