Co-chairman Tom Hicks said last week he couldn't imagine Gerrard playing for any other club and the player agreed and has begun peliminary talks with the Reds about a new contract.

"I'm in talks to extend my contract and I've never been happier with my football," said the Liverpool skipper.

"I expect deals to be agreed after the Champions League," confirmed Rafael Benitez.

"We have been talking to several players, not just Steven.

"Those talks were suspended ahead of the Chelsea game in the Champions League, but we will start talking again.

"Nobody has yet agreed a deal, but if we can get them sorted out, as well as some for younger players too, before the Champions League final at the end of the month, we will do."
