Gerrard is the perfect captain

Carragher was not suprised that Gerrard was given the captain's armband before the England game citing his maturity in the role at Liverpool.

"Stevie's the obvious choice," said Carragher.

"He's shown he's perfect for the role at Liverpool, which is one of the biggest clubs you could be the captain of. It's a natural progression for him to go and skipper his country.

"I can tell how delighted Stevie is. Mind you, when I asked him if he was captain yesterday and he said 'yes' I did remind him I've 'been there and done that'.

"Seriously though, I think ever since he's been a young lad people have talked about him as a future Liverpool and England captain.

"Maybe it's come along a bit sooner than he'd have expected. I'm sure Sven Goran Eriksson thought he was a good choice because England have never lost a game when Stevie has played. If he can keep that record as captain, everyone will be happy.

"Since he's become Liverpool captain, Stevie has really matured on an off the pitch. He's a very vocal type of captain and he won't be scared to have a go at players if it's needed.

"I think it's great for our club and the city in general to have a scouser as captain in England. Although I did it briefly, I don't think anyone from Liverpool has captained the try since Phil Thompson."
