The Fabio Capello era got off to a winning start thanks to goals from Jermaine Jenas and Sean Wright-Phillips. Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard played a part in both goals.

Gerrard crossed to Joe Cole who beat his man and put in the cross that Jenas opend the scoring from. Peter Crouch had come on as subsitute in the 57th minute and he played a part in the winner. Crouch flicked the ball on for Wayne Rooney, Rooney passed it to Gerrard and the Reds' skipper played it across the area for Wright-Phillips to tap home for 2-1.
