The Reds midfielder has endured a tumultous year in which has missed a World Cup, been criticised for poor form and hit the headlines over a late tackle on Gary Naysmith.

The England midfielder believes 2003 can only bring with it better things for himself and Liverpool.

He says: "There have been highs in 2002 but I will be happy to see the back of the low times and, hopefully, 2003 will be a good one for me and Liverpool.

"I don't want to look back on it and say it has been a complete disaster because I have has good times. But it has been up and down and I have had the worst experience of my career this year.

"Those are the things that make you stronger, though. I don't think anybody's career has all been about the high points. It's just important that you learn from then."
