Liverpool won their eighth Premiership game in a row without conceding a goal when they beat the Geordies 2-0 at Anfield in their Boxing Day clash. Captain Steven Gerrard, who opened the scoring, was happy with the Reds' performance.

"We played well. I think a lot of people expected us to be tired but we did well. It was important that we got the three points and we just want to keep the good run going and keep on improving," said Gerrard.

"Shay Given is a world-class goalkeeper and if there can be any criticism of us it was that we did not finish them off."
