Gerrard became the fifth Liverpool player to pick up the honour on Sunday evening, following in the footsteps of Terry McDermott, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and John Barnes. After the ceremony Gerrard spoke of his pride in receiving the award.

"I am still in shock to be honest. If you look at the shortlist, there are five other guys who have so much talent. They are all special players," says Gerrard, who pipped Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry and John Terry to the honour," said the Liverpool captain.

"I looked at the list of past winners and there are some fantastic names on there – some legends, so I am really proud to have joined them, it's really special.

"This caps a great weekend for me, what with getting through to the FA Cup Final and now winning this award. I was genuinely surprised and when you look at the names who have won the award in the past, it is an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as those people."

Jamie Carragher, along with Gerrard, was nominated in the PFA Team of the Year.
