The Reds skipper had always made it clear that he wanted to stay at Anfield and agreeing the new deal was just a formality.

"I think Stevie signing a new deal is exciting for the supporters," Gerard Houllier told the club's official site.

"It shows the players at the club share our vision for the future. They know we are improving and it's a very good piece of news for everyone who loves the club.

"Stevie is the captain now and he wants to stay and win trophies at Anfield. He leads by example in training and it's a great example to set for all the young players at this club.

"He has become a person now that the players want to play for and win for. He's earned their respect through sheer hard work.

"I'm proud of how Stevie has developed and maybe one day he could win the European footballer of the year award like Michael Owen did."
