Gerrard ready to continue as second striker

Gerrard played as a second striker for England in Tuesday's friendly with Hungary. It was the first time Gerrard had played in that role at international level but he did play there numerous times for Liverpool in Rafael Benitez's first season in charge of the Reds.

Although he is England's best midfielder, Gerrard says he is happy to continue playing as a second striker if that is where Sven Goran Eriksson wants to play him.

"I enjoyed it and think it went quite well against Hungary, but I'm nowhere near as good as Rooney there, am I?" said the Liverpool skipper.

"It's not strange really because I've played that role for Liverpool. I've played about four or five different positions this season and I'm quite comfortable when I have to adapt.

"I know what to do when I get the ball. I've been playing football for a long time! The rules are simple, you keep the ball and you move. Pass and move.

"I enjoy getting into the box and scoring goals and I enjoyed it against Hungary, but I'm never going to be as good as Wayne Rooney in that position.

"But if he's not going to be fit for the first couple of games, then I'm prepared to give it my best in that role."
