With many at Anfield still wary of the controversial departure of Steve McManaman on a bosman free transfer, the club are keen to tie up the influential 23-year-old to a new contract as he has just two years left on his current deal.

The player himself insists that the Anfield faithful need not worry as he is more then happy to remain a Liverpool player for the forseeable future.

Gerrard said: "I have two years left on my contract and everyone knows when you reach that stage it's really make or break time.

"Would I move abroad? You can never say never. But everyone knows I'm happy at Liverpool.

"I'm 23, and still have time to run on my current deal and I'm sure I'll sign a new contract fairly soon to stay.

"But I don't know when discussions will start. I think the club want me and I want them, so I'm sure things will get sorted out."
