Gerrard relishing skipper role

"I'm enjoying the challenge and I'm sure it'll be only a matter of time before I lead the team back up into the top four," he said.

"Obviously the captaincy comes with a lot of responsibility but I'm looking forward to the challenge and hopefully it'll mature me as a person and as a player.

"I feel over the last couple of years i've matured on both sides and hopefully that will keep getting better.

"I've got a good captain to learn from in Sami Hyypia who did a good job when he had the armband and I keep learning as much as I can and try to do the job to the best of my ability.

"I'm fortunate to have some experienced players around the dressing room in Didi Hamann, Stephane Henchoz and Sami Hyypia so I can learn from players like that."

The responsibility has increased on my behalf and I've got to make sure I'm consistent as a player and a role model for other players and other people around the club on and off the field so there's a lot more pressure but I'm enjoying it and I'm giving it my best shot.
