The tough-tackling midfielder, who joins Anfield colleague Michael Owen on the sidelines for Sunday's Old Trafford clash, will return to Melwood for treatment on the injury.
"Steven Gerrard has a back strain and after full consultation between the medical staff at Liverpool and England, has pulled out of the squad," revealed FA spokesman Adrian Bevington.
