Gerrard picked up a hip injury whilst playing for England against Macedonia last week, missing yesterday's 1-0 victorty at Elland Road as a result.

But after initial hope that Gerrard would be fit to play against Spartak it seems that he'll now miss out after failing to adequatly recover from the knock.

Despite the loss of one of Liverpool's most influential players, however, boss Gerard Houllier remains upbeat about his sides prospects on Tuesday.

He said: "A good result in Moscow would be history - no British team has won there against Spartak.

"It is like when we went to Kiev at the same time last year and became the first British side to win there. "

There is good news though with Emile Heskey, an influential figure in the corresponding fixture at Anfield, set to play some part in the game.

"We are looking to win the game because it would put us in a good position in the group. Moscow are a bit like Leeds in the sense you have to get at them from the start and we will try to keep them at bay . And I'm hoping Emile Heskey will be okay to play."
