Gerrard treble sees Reds through

Gerrard's treble, along with goals from Ryan Babel and Sami Hyypia saw the Reds comfortably book a home fourth round tie with Swansea or Havant & Waterlooville last night.

Liverpool started the game really brightly with early chances for Peter Crouch, Fernando Torres and Gerrard. However, with a bit of sloppy finishing coupled with some excellent defending from the Luton players who threw themselves in front of everything, the game remained goaless for 45 minutes.

Luton were close to seeing out the half and going in at the break with their tails up when Ryan Babel finally broke the deadlock in first half injury time. Fernando Torres received the ball by the half way line, stormed through to the edge of the area before laying the ball off to Babel who hammered home to the relief of the crowd.

From the kick off at the start of the second half Xabi Alonso tried to lob the goalkeeper but Dean Brill was alert and made an easy catch. It was a temporary respite.

Seven minutes into the second half Jermaine Pennant sent a deep cross to the far post, Peter Crouch headed back across goal and Steven Gerrard was on hand to head home Liverpool's second.

Five minutes later Gerrard turned provider when he whipped in a corner that Sami Hyypia headed in off the post. Gerrard then slotted home from the edge of the area after 64 minutes before completing his hat-trick in style with a 25 yard screamer with twenty minutes remaining.
