Gerrard wants big performance

The Reds have an excellent record in Europe under Rafael Benitez but have found the Champions League qualifiers difficult games. Steven Gerrard is hoping they can improve on these early games this season.

"We've not played particularly well in these qualifiers in previous years," admits the Liverpool skipper.

"With all due respect to some of the opponents we've had, we've always been able to get away with just doing enough without ever coming close to being at the top of our game.

"That's dangerous and we'll be trying to show our best form against Toulouse to make sure we don't make any silly mistakes.

"For me, this is just as important as any Champions League game. If you want to play the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea or AC Milan, or enjoy those great European nights at Anfield, this is where it starts. There's no question of us taking it easy.

"I noticed they beat Lyon over the weekend, who've done really well in the Champions League in the last few years, so that shows they've got ability."
